What if I love to wear neutrals? Part I

I get this question a lot, is it a point having a color analysis if I love to wear neutral colors? Most definitely. Neutrals are not just black, white and grey as the fashion industry has claimed for years. Neutrals are different for each season. And as I have said before, only winters can successfully wear black and optic white. The rest of us has to come up with alternatives.

In this blogpost I will talk about neutrals for the cool seasons Winter and Summer. And I will show how to put together neutral outfits for the different Contrast levels.

Winters has the advantage they can rock black and white. They can also use different shades of grey, taupe, navy and soft white. Black is not the best option for a light Winter though.

For summers grays will be a good neutral, everything from charcoal grey to light grey, depending on your coloring of course. Cocoa brown, navy, grey-blue, rose beige and soft white are also good alternatives for a summer.

I will show alternatives in black, white and grey, but it’s easy to use other neutral colors. Navy instead of black for instance.

Light

This combination will work for both Winters and Summers. Summers would have to choose a soft white though. Note that for some grey can be a little dull, so a small splash of color up to your face will elevate this outfit a lot. A scarf or a necklace for instance. You can also do the opposite a medium dark suit and a lighter top. If you want to wear jeans choose light or medium wash.

True

This is a good option for a True Winter, a True Summer would have to use an alternative to the black camisole. Charcoal grey or navy for instance.
You can also put the colors the other way round, a medium dark camisole and a dark suit. If you want to wear jeans choose a medium or dark wash.

Vivid

A Vivid will look a bit dull in an all Neutral outfit, to really shine a Vivid needs to add some bright. It does not have to be a lot. A scarf, a necklace, a bright bag or a top. In this outfit a Vivid Winter could also used a black top and only used the scarf as the pop of color.
Vivids are mostly Winters or Autumns, I have yet not seen Vivid Springs or Summers. If you want to wear jeans choose a dark wash.

Contrasting

For a Contrasting to really shine the mantra is Dark, Light and Bright. Without the small pop of color a Contrasting would look a bit faded. This outfit is for a contrasting Winter. A Summer could have used Navy or their darkest gray in this outfit, and the optic white should be replaced by a softer white. Choose light or dark wash jeans. Instead of a scarf the pop of color could have been a bag, a pair of shoes or a necklace.

Some contrastings can also pull off an all dark, neutral outfit.
